Giving Up

Fantasies and wishful thinking, dreams that wonít come true
Welcome to my poetry for this is what I do
Squeezing all my heart can give and splattering the words
Only to watch them picked apart as if by flocks of birds.

Iíve seen enough, I canít deny that life devours my hope,
And every time I speak of love Iím acting like a dope.
Iím sorry Iím pathetic, but Iíve watched my loved ones die
And looked at all the answers here but none of them say why.

Iíve hung on to my dreams too long; itís time to let them goÖ
Stop thanking God for hurting me because I didnít know.
I recognize the set up is just leading to a fall,
And God- Iím so embarrassed that I thought I had it all.

At least there was sincerity in everything I did
And there will not be jail time here for acting like a kid,
The innocence was stupid but Iím over all that now.
And hope that I can keep from dreaming poems of love somehow.

Reason is the antidote all doctors have prescribed
Against my world of poetry and promises it bribed.
No longer a believer as I settle down to earth
Iíll take up planting memories of love for what itís worth.

You know how many times I've told my heart to give up?
Guess what?
It only listens to you.
Thanks all you angels!

Well, John, this is so beautifully written and flows wonderfully. Well, you knew you'd get a reaction, didn't you!?!
Of course, I'm with Tinka on this one! Don't give in to the cynics! Keep planting those memories in your poetry and we'll all enjoy the fruit of your labour!

Don't stop dreaming... the price is too great in the end. I just revised a poem (The Executioner) on this very topic recently. "Giving Up" speaks of much heartache and loss and I reiterate Dave, you gotta lose it to find it. When you're at the bottom, there's only one way out: Up. Hang in there! Keep writing. It will help to exorcize your personal demons. I wish you the best. :)

The Bible says, you need to lose it to find it... 12-step groups say the same thing. So don't give up, your close to finding it all...

Well John sometimes it is very difficult to face things but giving up is not an option. I agree with Karen and Sue and take it from me as I have survived much. Do not give up and God knows your address. I could not have survived all the surgery that I have had and three bouts of cancer by giving up. Unless you let go and let God.
