Milkmaid

if the song seemed right,
she’d play it again,
the stylus dropped just so,
the speakers rasping the viola;
so we sat longer, the couches
slipping into duress.
soon the tea would appear,
cream cheese cake too,
a bit of ice cream for some.
duty was painful, made bearable,
made somehow fine,
by soft hands, cool fingers,
slipping secrets between helpings
of Mozart and mud pies,
her smile ready with irony
and a pinch of wit.
