This is a long one so get a cup of tea and sit comfortably...my insipiration for this one, for some reason came from Ron Hull after reading DEPENDENCE...Check it out too...ed

EMP…

The absence of cars,

Did first give him great solace,

No TV, nor radio,

No way to make ice for his drink,

Not even if he went to the bars,

He lived in the high Texan country,

He was used to no electricity,

He lived way up close to the stars…

No news had he heard,

Not even from the carrier bird,

He expected one last night,

When it didn’t show by this morning,

He thought it had found someone’s sights…

His telephone, which worked off and on anyway,

Did not dial, had no tone, was off all of today,

No cell phone service when there was a tower just a mile away,

He heard no noises, only the birds that did on the wind play…

From his high point of view,

He could see through his telescope nothing new,

No movement in the sky,

No planes were his first clue,

Something in the world of man has gone awry…

He and his dog did venture down from his mountaintop,

To see if all was well, to the land he did call hell,

Of people and places and noise and signs that say stop,

People all rushing around, like little ants in an ant farm,

Doing a lot but getting nothing done,

That is how he did view this world of man he did shun…

Upon his arrival he did realize that something was amiss,

It seemed this place was more so than its usual abyss,

No one was about, no noisy gas conveyances made their presence known,

He was as he loved throughout his life, all alone…

Where did they go?

What happened to them?

Were they swallowed by some great beast?

Their vehicles just seemed to lie in a great heap…

All the homes leveled to the foundation,

He could find no trace; apparently there was total annihilation,

Was he the last human being on the face of this nation?

If so he would be most happy, unable to show all his elation…

But what of this technology that man did tout so abundantly,

They spoke of and through and did sell so redundantly,

It was all gone, no towers in the sky, no planes to fly,

Not one technological or electrical appliance left did he spy,

After the BOMB would come the great EMP…

Of course no one would care,

They all being dead and gone out there,

This world up till now did him repulse,

Now he knew the cause of the earth’s electronic malady,

It was part and parcel of mans nuclear heritage,

Yes it was, is and will be the Electro-Magnetic Pulse…

Unless valves are used, which are immune to EMP, as the russians realise.

Hey Ed, it's nice to be an inspiration. Although being an inspiration to total annihilation wasn't what I had in mind. Following your advice, I whistled and following the 50 page guide from an Internet techie, some guy my helper knows may fetch my keyboard back. Otherwise it's out to buy a new puppy so that I can typee in my tepee.

Wow, is right! This looms at the top of your best, Ed. It surely does. It's an appropo warning to humankind but threaded with a well-developed character study of a hermit existence, giving it a rather palpable feeling of doom. It will linger, indeed.

You are such a generous and thoughtful writer... giving credit for inspirations and guiding readers to the source... very generous, indeed! YOU are an inspiration, as well, as a writer and as a grand person. katy xox
