Based on the lyrics of songs by Suzanne Vega... already redrafted since its posting late last night! :)

SUZANNE

I have no substance but the sound
of footsteps ticking,
and the brittle branches of my breath
that crack.

My shadow on the pavement
is the scattering of light.

I have once swallowed
a secret burning thread
that cuts me deep inside
and now I have bled.

Leaving a trail for you to find
I keep you close to lick my wounds,
as you walk invisible
on the side of me that's blind.

I long for the freedom
that is a bullet in full flight,
the piercing point of a needle,
the sharp cutting of a knife.

Hold me tight:
cold and round
I am the marble in your pocket;
the eye that watches you
unblinking.

When you see straight through me
I close myself up like a fan,
concealing all the secrets
of the dark side of the moon.

This is such a profound write, Kate. Some people do close up so no one can ever get to know them, love them or get under their skin. It is a sad situation, but a common one. This is outstanding writing.
Take care,
Sherry

I know alot of people like Suzanne...closing up like a fan so those who can see through them are left clueless. This is a terrific write. I love Suzanne Vega's music too. Michelle
