An old friend did ride home with me tonight…

Just over my right shoulder, there he rose,

Rising in the east as I was heading south,

Could only see his nose and part of his mouth,

Had a reddish tint did he, from the sun I did suppose…

He did change, as he got higher,

Less he did look as if he were on fire,

For me he did not have to change his attire,

Just the fact of seeing him and being able to talk,

That in itself was my only desire…

Through the darkening night did we travel together,

He higher into the sky, me further towards home,

He kept me happy and did talk to me,

Knowing he did how far today I did have to roam,

Wish I could see him every night; he is such a good friend,

It was quite nice to watch him into the starry night ascend…

By now you must realize who this friend may be,

The old moon does play an important part in the night sky; see?

He kept me from becoming sleepy,

And followed me all the way home before he did further his height extend…
