“There is nothing in which birds differ more from man

Than the way in which they can build,

And yet leave a landscape as it was before.”

Robert Lynd

˙

I know a sky island

That is Heaven on Earth

It’s a sanctuary above the desert

Filled with wonderment and mirth

It’s a place called Madera Canyon

In the Santa Rita Mountains near Tucson

And it’s filled with over 200 species of birds

An exotic natural paradise of which I’m quite fond

Sixteen species of delightful hummingbirds are here

As well as hawks owls jays flycatchers and desert wrens

And a most intriguing bird from Mexico – the Elegant Trogan

Which makes an arduous 2,500 mile journey here again and again

I’ve journeyed to magnificent Madera Canyon many times in my life

Last year for the very first time I introduced this heaven to my lovely wife

And this bird watching paradise inspired me to write a book for young boys

A tale filled with birds a ghost a boy his loyal wolf dog and many of nature’s joys

˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙

If you have any nature loving young readers in your family aged 8-11,

Please check out my middle reader novel about this bird watcher’s heaven.

- Mystery of Madera Canyon -

And if you are searching for a little piece of Heaven on Earth,

You may want to plan a vacation trip to this Lovely Land of Mirth;

But you better hurry since today we pave them over as if they have no worth,

And very sadly to me, far too many of them have now vanished since my birth.

Birds in Photo Clockwise from Lower Left:

A Mexican Jay,

A female and male Elegant Trogan,

Rufous Hummingbird,

Broad-billed Hummingbird, Flycatcher,

Violet-Crowned Hummingbird, Screech Owl,

And the ever lovable Roadrunner – Beep, Beep!

“A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer,

It sings because it has a song.”

Chinese Proverb

Ed, This is wonderful and the book I'm sure I would enjoy but have a nephew in that age group --I think he is (They grow up too fast) I quit growing up when I was 8.
This is only a 150 miles or so away from me. I'm going to get there Thanks so much. I need the peace of nature.
Printing this out so when I see those birds I can baffle all with my brillance! Thank you so much but...
The Beautiful Couple of love birds in the middle of the picture You forgot to put those down. (c:)

I'm still a kid at heart, and loved your book "Madera Canyon,"
Eddie. I hope it sells thousands!
Your poem, above, is lovely as well. My personal "island sanctuary" is my back yard garden and wilderness area. Everything from tree frogs to Eagles and bears. I live in a veritable Eden!

Birds! The inhabitants of heaven. Intelligent and beautiful. I have never visited this sanctuary, but I hope to. Katy has an idea Ed! Start on a public access station, you might get picked up(stop it, E.M.). You'd be a hit. Beauty of a write...thank you.

I go through about 120 lbs. of birdseed each month, and am rewarded with the most beautiful orchestrated songs from the birds; even the coo, coo, coo of dove and pigeons are music to my ears :o)
Your verse points out what beauty we may be destroying every day. Again, Thanks, Ed, for bring more awareness of this plight.

You know something, Little Polish Eddie K, my dear...

You've missed your calling, as they say. I'm thinking of our mutually loved David Attenborough. With your crackling wit, your love of words and your vast knowledge and love for all non-human creatures, not to mention nature, itself, you ought to be filming, narrating and bringing your joys and info to the mases. I think Sir David would be most impressed... and you WOULD make a difference. I just know it! (gorgeous picture!... who's the cute guy? hehe) katy xox
