What could be worse than spending your last hours of existence in a mind full of regrets and guilt over your life exploits? Only one thingóbeing the victim of those deeds..

The Canal Path

Great white capped
mushrooms
line the bare bank
of The Locks.

They took the trees
down
after the heaviest snow,
before
the gates
re-opened for spring.

So.
No one heard
their great spirits
calling.
No one saw
them fall.

In April we found
ourselves
strolling through
a cemetary
of forest memory.

Instead,
A panoramic,
unobstructed view
of the canal.
straight across
to the far shore.

So.
In our back yard
at the river bank
a dog size beaver
clutches a stick
in its jaws.

The beaver
won't loosen
its grip
of this one
scraggly branch.

The beaver stands frozen
as a garden statue.
Doesn't know
where
to re-locate.
So.
