Lovers come and go
A momentary mirage of
Fortuitous and fanciful shadows
Of persons imagined
To meet our selfish needs

Illusions of idolatry
Permeate our psyche
Pretend to promise
Commitment and compassion
Love for the living

What happened to love?
Too many promises to keep
Lives filled with sadness and deceit
Monogamous mortals
Caught in a maelstrom

Beyond this world
A light shines for us
We know Him by many names
But one I shall always keep
Is Lover for me and you

love may come and go but if we learn and teach and enjoy its company, it can't be a bad experience ... only love that is "selfish" leaves us empty and unfulfilled ... excellent poem ...

Lovers come and go, but love lasts. Enjoyable read. R

Ahhh Keith, but don't poets hold onto the thought that love is real and changes everything?
Nicely done. : )

What happened to love? Progress. That is the culprit. Nowadays love runs second fiddle to almost everything else. A lot of poems are written about it, a lot of people profess to WANT it, but no one seems to care to struggle through the bad times in order to keep it. Good poem.
