Some nightmares happen when you are wide awake...

the four of us
alone
you came
home
he was
so young
he left the
iron on.
you wanted to
teach
him a
lesson.

your voice
so
loud
yelling
put your
hand
on the iron.
i
smelled
the
sweet
sickening
smell
of beer.

i
was shaking
my heart
pounding
in my
chest.
it's so
hard
to breathe
STOP
i was
so small
you were
so big.

please
stop
no one
ever
talked
about
that
day.
it
never
happened.

I
remember
the
sweet
sickening
smell
of fear.

Oh my gosh, I know the smell of sheer terror as well, you never forget it. My first memory was peeing on myself while being beaten and not daring to cry. That memory irks my soul. Love the style of this.

Gets me right where it should--very good. It's funny, but as I came out on campus this morning the air smelled of wet dog. It was probably pending rain that never came, but I thought I might make a poem of it.
