"Green young Marines red sunset scenes / The catfish-fry and Semper Fi"

Transcendental Sonnet #1381:

MCAS Yuma

for Heartshope Kandaroo

The smoke trees and the mesquite trees

And all the land was only sand

My manzanita memories

The Arizona of my dreams

Was paradise or so it seems

Across these California years

I know it now I understand

That there was hardly anywhere

But looking through something like tears

All I remember is the good

Chretin's tamales refried beans

Quartz saguaros petrified wood

Green young Marines red sunset scenes

The catfish-fry and Semper Fi

Except for me... it was 29 Palms, California (Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Station); and, yes, the 'green young Marines' describes us when we first arrived, fresh from "boot camp." More accurately, we were stark white, but then, after a year and a half in the Mojave Dessert sun, our skin had a nice tone. Thank you for this memory. -- Jeff
