Howl

From the cold north
Beneath a canopy of glowing stars
This soulful sound pierces the darkness
Reaching deep into all of us-
Not our ears, but our hearts.
To each of us it holds a different meaning.
Every heart contains a scream-
All hold longing in the deepest recesses
Of who we are, who we wish to be.
We do know what life intends for us.
Dreams are a hunger which draw us all
To the magic waters.
So we listen, we hear, we join.
It becomes us-
Yet too often there is sorrow
In this deep cry of our hearts.
This is the sorrow I know.
For all my strength
I can’t lift you unless you let go
Of what is keeping you from
The greatest dream of all.
Why wouldn’t you let go?
It has always been this way.
My love lifts against the resistance
And I howl…
For you.

John,
You know I love your poetry. From the deeply painful to the free hand, heart touching, soul searching..to absolutely breathtaking. It's all great writing.
This one is in a category of it's own..because every poet at one time or another as done their best to capture what you've managed.
Thank you for allowing the rest of us a share.

John, you express so well that "deep cry of our hearts". I don't remember anyone writing it as well as you have. Thank you for sharing...

"Every heart contains a scream" -- I think I must've written a hundred poems around this theme, but I never captured it as well as these five words. Those last three lines are absolutely, hauntingly beautiful, John. I'm saving this one, too. Thank you for penning it. Dawn
