Some dark humour

Two Old Ladies

The veranda at the old peoples home,

overlooked the valley that ran to the sea.

Mary and Betty sat recumbent in electric

chariots, enjoying summer

Mary was ninety-three.

There they sat, grace and favour retired from labour

looking out over the velvet green scene

picturesque, beautiful, and deceptively serene.

On the horizon, there came a mighty flash,

“look!” cried Mary, “It’s the face of God.”

“Oh – I can’t see without my glasses on”

said Betty, and promptly turned to ash.

What a coup!! :) Reminds me of two ladies sitting on the porch of
a Victorian in Richmond years ago. One had dyed her hair jack-o'lantern orange, the other, jet black. I have imagined their conversation so many times. Easy to laugh, but. . .they seemed to be saying, "We are a l i v e, dammit. Ain' g o i n ' nowhere!!
Thanks for the laugh. . .and reminder. . .'Pea' <3

This ia a very interesting poem. Since I'm an old lady and have spent some time in assisted living places, I can identify with Mary and Bttty. I have again become independent in my living style, but I can remember sitting out on another veranda, watching the world go by. I don't have time to do that anymore. I need to write. Emma

Wow, how did I miss this? Maybe I didn't want to witness poor Betty falling victim to her failure to realize that one does not view God with one's eyes but with one's heart and spirit. Surely she should have gotten that by her age. What a tough lesson you offer in this brilliant write. Yet it's one that much of the world would do well to heed right about now. Peace.

What a way to go!~

This strikes me as delicious...something missing, along the lines "and the moral of the tale..." ? But then, your readers ought to figure it out. Well done!

Paul,

Bitter irony makes for scary posibilities...and we thought the Nuclear age was long gone. YIPE!

Dark, yet humorous--and very well penned. :)

Brillo! Sorry to be picky, but I'm tired: wouldn't it be Mary who turned to ash, having looked into the face of God?! After all, poor old Betty couldn't see, bless her?! Yeah, just call me hormonal... You do humour well, Paul - obviously better than my ability to receive it at the moment... and, hey, jus jokin, of course! LOL Kate xx
