this is dedicated to the man that married my mother when I was 2 years old, adopted and raised me as his own. He passed away on May 19, 2005.
. . .I love you Dad.

  Dedicated to Harold C. Hughes
July 25 ,1925 Ė May 19, 2005

There's my Dad - standing tall and strong,
whether right or wrong, thatís who he was.
Thatís my Dad - he once was young and proud,
sometimes more than allowed, that's my Dad . . .

Growing up Ė I was the oldest of six kids,
a lot was laid on me I didn't like.
Even though - I wasn't really his, he offered me his name
and stood against his family for what was right.
A lot of things were forced upon us, an indication of the times.
We'd stand toe to toe and argue - over everything, sometimes.

But he's my Dad - standing tall and strong,
whether right or wrong, thatís who he was.
That's my Dad - he once was young an proud,
sometimes more than allowed, that's my Dad . . .

And as I got older, I got closer to the man.
He let me go my own way, even though against his plans.
He admitted I was old enough and had my life to live,
but he was always there for me, ready to forgive.

That's my Dad - standing tall and strong,
whether right or wrong, thatís who he was.
That's my Dad - he once was young an proud,
sometimes more than allowed, that's my Dad . . .

Gee, I just saw you yesterday and you didn't look "smokey" or "lonesome" but I recognize your heart. Your poem gives every stepchild hope. Hope for a connection from a source often elusive and from a child's perspective, sometimes scary. Bless you for passing the love on to your own; biological or not. The world needs more dads like you.

Very touching tribute to your dad. As the saying goes; anyone can 'father' a child, but it takes a special person to be a 'dad'.

My grandson has your dad's middle name. This means you are both "smokey" and "cool!" And I know you wrote a melody about it (or at least are planning a melody)

blessin's Curmudgeon Brother (and that's okay with me!)
