"Perhaps it would be better had I never known / Had my innocence remained that I am alone"

Transcendental Sonnet #1388:

Had I Never Known

They say it is better to

Love even if you lose

Assuming that you choose

To continue and that you

Are not hollowed-out inside

And the feeling you have died

Ultimately passes

Until the time you do

I wonder is it true ?

I look at the masses

All of these people I see

Are they as lonely as me?

Perhaps it would be better had I never known

Had my innocence remained that I am alone
