sweet sticky Indiana nights
when the sweat clings to skin
like warm molasses
and the air sits heavy and woolen
around the shoulders

back porch swing
squeaks rusty in the country darkness
while bullfrogs rumble
in the pond past the pasture

a cow lows
a dog barks

and in the distance
the whistle of the train

across the expanse
the dark canvess pulses
pinpoints of white
winking secrets in the night sky

faerie dancers
in nocturnal minuet
child-like wish bringers
with a magic all their own

shining light from within
a mysterious code
hoping the message
will bring a companion
to share the darkness

and the moon
hangs over the ocean of stars
while the night
weaves her indigo song

one learns much
in the company of fireflies

You bring back many memories with this wonderful touching write, I remember as a kid catching a few fireflys and putting them into a clear glass jar and watching the magic of their lights going on and off and then I would set them free. I don't know what has killed their population off but here in Long Island N.Y. I rarely see them anymore.

alexandre makes a good point ... when i was a child fireflies were abundant in the summer months ... now i rarely see any ... you bring them back to life for me in this wonderful poem ...

wow, this was really good. i especially liked the 7th section (shining light from within...). it's sad that fireflies are becoming endangered on the east coast, i miss them somethin fierce.
