...1...2...3...

beautiful sky above me
crickets and grasshoppers singing nearby
the sun warms my face

and I barely notice

...4...5...6...

my mind is focused elsewhere

"How many steps?" I ask myself.

how many steps before
I obtain "the scrunch"

that uncomfortable moment
my shorts bunch up between my fat thighs

not rubinesque, not pleasingly plump

just

fat

...7...8...

the thighs I promised would be thinner
this summer

...9...10...

and the last

...now...

and then I jig
an imperceptable turn of the left leg
mid-stride
(Baryshnikov would be proud)

and down the fabric falls

between the thighs
that no light shines between

back to the beginning

...1...2...3...

thank God

I didn't wear corduroy

....4...5...
