{M u c h-needed revision of 'Arkansas Tattoos...' Latter title meant to refer to blood and bruises caused by
the belt. Sorry for not being clear. Was in too big a hurry. Not sure I have the skill to ...nevermind. Let me know how you feel about this version, if you have time. . .& aren't totally out of patience. Merci, mes ami, Pea <3

Leather, Menís size 34.  Leather,
say a quarter of an inch thick.
Width, say an inch.   Buckle, two.
Buckle a souvenir the mother picked up
on a trip to Memphis to stick it to
the stick-in-the-mud she was stuck with.
Mr. Conservative with his white shirts
and funeral suits turns up his nose.
Told you to buy me a belt,  he sniffs.
Not trash a rodeo clown would wear.
Later she found it tucked way back,
thought, thisíll do the trick.  Hang it
on the back of the bathroom door,
be  handy.   Still see the Arkansas flag
embossed.  Squeezed in the state bird.
Mockingbird mocks.  Metalís so shiny,
look hurts.  In time, the target will learn
the flowers stamped around the edge
were apple blossoms.  State flower, yes.
Almost too little to see.   What with rage
flying out of nowhere.  Go get the belt!
she screams.    Go get the belt!
she shouts.  Going to skin you alive!!

Leather, say a quarter of an inch
thick.  Width, say an inch.  Buckle

I still think this evokes nightmarish images of abuse...powerfully written memories.

Your poem sucked me in, but I am still unclear as to the use of the belt. Is it to spank the child, would her husband punish her by beating her with it, will she use it to hang herself or strangle her husband? Perhaps the belt will be used for all these things. The shiny buckle made me think that a child has studied it and looked at it in fear. This is a good poem, Pea, it leaves the reader to insert their own thoughts as to who would be using the belt and how. I was spanked with a belt on an occasion or two as a child, perhaps I am injecting my own fears here.
Take care,

Intriguing composition. Its imagery strikes attention, and its
rhythm flows vividly. "T h e B e l t" offers a live depicting
of a familyīs affairs.

I enjoyed the reading of "T h e B e l t".
