Dedicated to all single mothers out there who have or are raising children on their own...

Baby Steps

He broke her heart too often

And she could not erase the past

No one could begin to understand

Why that love did not last

Somehow he broke a part of her

Of the heart she had given him

He sacrificed her love forever

On some foolish one night whim

She stood in the room as baby cried

And she promised that little boy

We will get by sweet child of mine

Then passed to him his favourite toy

They grew together mom and child

Each taking baby steps all new

She made a home and made a life

She did what she had to do

On graduation day they both stood tall

Baby steps up to the stage he had to walk

Received his diploma standing tall

Afterwards child to mother he began to talk

He thanked her for her years of love

Asked her: What now Mom, what do I do?”

It is time for your own baby steps she said

I have made the futures path for you.

Outstanding write Felix, there are so many like which you so describe, and they do it all. Some single dads out there, but by far, it is the women that carry the torch.

Took an amazing twist, shows a real pride in the sound that mom and son did fine, even after the dad's betrayal. A simple and heartfelt melody that resonates beautifully.

Great poem Felix, what a tribute to single moms .And as a single mom myself i take great offense to being called pathetic.I dont know about you Jennifer but i take great pride in bringing up a smart, healthy, and happy member of society and if you call that pathetic then SHAME ON YOU.Thanks again Felix

In reply to Jennifer, in all fairness most women don't chose to be single mothers and the ones that do ususally have a good reason to chose. I do not find it depressing I find it wonderful and heart warming that these women make a good life for them and their children. Also if you were a single Mom in past and did not find your child enough of a reason to live and love to the fullest of your abilities then I pity you. In my books the women and someimes men that strive as single parents to give their kids the best they can in this world are hero's and there are few of those in this world.

What a wonderful write this is! I love this from beginning to end. We always learn from others, and with each new knowledge and path there will always be those baby steps.

How depressing. There's nothing more pathetic than a single mom. I know. I've been one ... in the past. That would never be my choice for "getting a life."

Felix, I am that woman. My son is 31 now and we truly did grow together.

I hear a sincere, warm, caring voice in this piece. You moved me.

Thank you, Felix, for such a gorgeous tribute. While I am fortunate in finding a man who loved my children as much as I do, there were a few years I was a single mother of two small children. BABY STEPS reads with a beautiful cadence and sends a message of strength and hope.
