A Distant Bell
by Kate Saundby

The sequel to A Circle of Arcs, this fast-moving historical time travel has been likened to riding a kayak through the rapids. If you were blind and could only see in..

Fearing the Moment

Fearing the Moment

Ventures into the past; Take
me on the stroll of never forgotten visuals;
Remembering each one, frame by frame; Thought
by endless thought; I see eyes, that lingered too
long; I hear cries, of the injured's moans
and songs

Like walls falling down; Destroying
a path once clear-
It's rumble never fading; Growing
louder in my ear-
Oh I can hear it's tempers; Feel it's
wrath and might-
Ripping away any joy; Then smiling
with evil spite

These feelings keep returning; Like viruses
that eat the flesh-
Morbidity in nostrils flare; Restless souls
begin to thresh-
Silence loses touch; The bells toll one
more time-
Pain marches in harmony; Up and down
my spine

All I fear is the moment; The one that
never comes-
It's a sad and lonely tune; That even
children seem to hum-
Somewhere in between tick; And the
forgotten sound of tock-
I stand alone, against the wall;
Trying to beat the clock

Darkness falls with dreariness; Knowing
sleep will not prevail-
For the eyes that cried that day; Has stopped
this ship from sail-
This storm has tossed about; It's anger
and it's toil-
Leaving all within it's grips; Stranded on
rocky soil

Venture I will into the past; Each time I
hear their cries-
Maybe one day while I'm there;
I'll find me; Within their eyes

This write is nothing short of amazing, though I expect no less from your extremely gifted pen. You somehow have captured in words the feeling of panic as it grabs at us and steals our breath and courage from us. That moment of fear so deeply seated that we wonder if we will ever go on from there or if time will get stuck forever. I love this line:
"Somewhere in between tick; And the
forgotten sound of tock-"
It is the moment when our heart stops and the bottom drops out of our world. Excellent work, my Friend!
Take care,
Sherry

This is a deep and haunting look into your soul and the memories of the past. Well said and well presented. I must read this again cause it appears to have several layers. Well done Lisa,

Very graphic and earthy; sensual in a dark way; especially like the discrete stopping of time and that moment of panic and horror that fear brings to all of us; nice write, Lisa.
