“If you could be anything, what would you be and why?

My challenge to all poets is to ponder this question and then write a poem about it.”

AD Author and Poet Joseph

There are truly many creatures that I admire

And many places on this earth I’d like to dwell

But if I had a choice in my very first reincarnation

Living the life of a loon in the north woods would be swell

This majestic aquatic creature of the northland

Is one of the oldest living bird species on this earth

Its ancestors roamed the world’s waters over 65 million years ago

And this fact truly fills my soul with both wonderment and mirth

The ancient Native American bands of the vast Great Lakes Region

Have very many legends about this intriguing bird we call the loon

I’ve been fascinated by this great ‘earth diver’ ever since childhood

And I love listening to its extremely haunting and eerie ancient tunes

And if I were allowed somehow to be born again on this planet

I would love to come back to my beloved north woods as a loon

Awakening each dawn surrounded by Creation’s magnificence

Swimming gloriously free and unfettered

And chanting their magnificent awe-inspiring tunes

I would also raise my many feathered younglings

To appreciate the bounty of earth’s glorious waters and woods

And every north woods evening I would lovingly call out to my mate

Knowing in my ancient heart and soul that our life together was truly good

Ed This poem is as flowing as the waters in which you would live and is so perfect for you as you are a very loving man in love with your mate and a Legend as well. This really is a comforting and nice poem and love everything about it and you and hope that if you have to come back to earth you will come back as the Loon.

wonderful wish and reasons for being a loon. The sounds of this bird is wonderful! I do miss the morning calls I often heard while living in Grande Cache and checking out the lake in the early morning for painting possibilies. It is a sound you never forget.

I think this is a magnificent answer to the challenge, and
I too love the loons which I listen to daily on my cd. I
use it to meditate...This is glorious Ed!

And what's wrong with being a loon? Their haunting calls at dusk are thrilling to listen to. :) You've surpassed Joseph's challenge brilliantly!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla. :)

Well, apart from Mrs Bigfoot which we've already discussed at some length here Ed, think otherwise I would have to return as this piece of music - it's everything I might aspire to be: spirit, soul, sea, serene (haha, Kate!) and... sleep inducing...zzzzzzzzzzz oh, and BTW you would outdo the loon in looniness, I am sure. Truly an emblem of The World According To Kostro. Neat write and deft response to the challenge. That's all, folks. Looneytune Kate xx

ooooooo... a challenge, LIttle Eddie? Hotdog! Hmmmmm... I'm one of those people who takes forever to make choices. Sigh... BUT... I do love these poetic challenges, sure do!

As you know, I have yet to see a loon "in person" though I've been close. All I wish now, is that YOU aren't my first! (grin) I'll see what I can do. Thanks... this is a lovely poem, too. katy xox
