Photograph taken by, Theresa Koch

Truly a gilded lily was she
Swaying slowly passed the
Bougainvillea draped across
The old cobble stone alley

Sweat slithered down her
Well endowed breasts
As humidity was making
Her hair feel just a muddled mess

Old southern accent
Added to her beauty and charm
If only she’d taken him with her
In those days now long gone

Finding him not alone
In their old mansion there
She took her own life
Landing at the base of the stairs

Now she walks down the path
Under old willow trees
Destined to stay in the midst
Of these cemetery trees

People call her the lady in red
That’s what they found her in
When she was pronounced dead
Seen in the moon light just passed the hill

She cries for the loss of her heart
To the man they called Bill
She’s a true gilded lily that walks on and on
Singing of the love she once had that went wrong

A gilded lily, for sure, a not all that bright gilded lily in my opinion. Should have pushed Bill down those stairs, or forgiven him, taking your own life because of a cheating hubby is a bit drastic. Just being my cynicall self this morning, this was a very good poem.

Haunting and sureal write that is just a little on the scary side if not for the compassion the writer makes one feel for Lily.
