A poem inspired by the friends who were concerned for my safety and home, during our recent evacuation from Hurricane Rita, and the kindness I witnessed on the freeways, however gridlocked they were. When one witnesses complete strangers offering rides to those who are broken down on the roadway, due to car trouble or lack of fuel, all in the name of goodwill and safety, it makes one realize that mankind is for the most part, warm-spirited, especially in trying situations.

Through each moment, indecisive
Is a glimpse of what can be
When the rays of hope, incisive
Shine for the whole world to see
These vibrant sparks come not of tinting
Made by stunning beams of gold
But are worthy of lamenting
For the kindness we behold.

When life’s journey is a hardship
That we wage to unknown end
We find faith on which to worship
Through the goodness of a friend
Sometimes timeless, sometimes newfound
Each soul brings a sense of worth
So we find the strength to rebound
‘Neath these rays of hope on earth.

The human spirit is a being
Unlike any known before
Since just as reason is fleeing
Faith and love are e’er restored
By these rays made not of pigment
Nor of predetermined mould
That bring more than just a figment
Of the kindness we behold.

Through each moment, indecisive
Is a glimpse of what can be
When our rays of hope, incisive
Shine their light, eternally
So that we may all continue
To thrive with the means to cope
Regardless of life’s harshest venue
Bound within our rays of hope.

I'm so glad you didn't get the worst of it Jill! My prayers and thoughts were with all who went through this harrowing time. It has been so widespread, almost too overwhelming to keep abreast of it all. Thank God there is a let up finally! My best to you and yours. Thanks for sharing!
