"Have a good one,"
Al from route 4's Sunoco in Troy said
while he handed me a styrofoam coffee cup.
As I made my way past the porn mags and beef jerky,
I tried dissecting his farewell.
A good what?
A good cup of coffee?
A good drive into work?
A good shit?
A good rumination about how time consuming it is to say:
"Have a nice day?"

As I stepped toward the coffee carafes,
I noticed Al's forehead.
Each line across his brow,
a reminder of the
good ones he has seen. He looked
at the coffee counter.

I heard Al huff as he left the cash register.
He walked behind me, and tapped my shoulder.
I moved aside.
Cursing the lack of coffee stirrers,
He cleaned the countertop.
Each stroke of his hand, a clock trying to reset.

Such an interesting depiction of how people mask their own pain by wishing others good "whatevers." Appreciate your kind words c.p.
Excellent visual in the second stanza.
