“There was never an us” she declared

Peering through candlelight … misplaced expectations

"Apparently not" came the voice shaken

Seeking only to escape the situation

Meal consumed, silence growing

Eyes avoiding disjointed stares

Severed connection, love mistaken

Detached coldness, candles glowing

Nothing more left to share

Save a last sip of wine

This is settling in the end. Relationships can be tragic unless we learn from them when they fall. Then they can be revealing the second time around. I like this once capture is wonderful.

The essence of when a relationship doesn't make it. Well written.

“There was never an us” she declared.

Those words are so hurtful. When one person feels he/she has a relationship with another and the other sees nothing more than the thinnest connection it's devastating to the rejected party. I don't know if it's worse when it turns out the party in love is simply self-deluded or when it turns out that he/she has been duped by the other. At least if it's a case of the other person intentionally conning you, then you know you didn't imagine the extra attention and the acts of affection. Unrequited love is the pits, to put it most unpoetically. :-) You've certainly captured the chilling sting of it with this poem. ~~Nordette

This sums up the awkwardness and chasm between two people who don't even want to share that last sip of wine, but sit there and suffer through it. Thank you for sharing...
