Late last evening – out of the night A screaming ambulance came into sight Flying by with the lights flashing bright Everyone watched ‘til it drove out of sight Someone’s life hung by a slim thread A man was found passed out in his bed His wife rushed to the phone -called 911 Begged our EMS unit quickly to come I was on call as the squad EMT My husband the driver scheduled with me I took patient vitals while Jim drove with care Working together on the job that we share. We entered the ER – wheeling the cart Nurse looked up quickly from checking a chart Doctors and nurses came running - I soon counted five All doing their best to keep him alive. Late in the evening – we called it a night Our job was well done – we had handled it right Reported the run to dispatch on the phone Then heaved a deep sigh and headed for home.
