Her temple ceremonial
space is intensely private.

Despite the orderliness of
the ruins, she is anything
but easy to navigate,
seven hundred roads.

Walls on either side of her
are 40-foot high, there are
no windows, only a slice of sky

More than seven hundred rooms
all plastered stark white.

Each society's records stored in urns and baskets where they
 can easily be retrieved and
called upon for heavenly advice.

The records have a practical side; they give the caretakers land
and water rights, proof that
your great-great grandfather
grandmother worked the land.

This belief creates heaven, the
only access you have to your

She has a serious demeanor.
She starts her climb a half of
a mile from the temple
crossing the lake's lapis
blue waters.

The highest peak pulls her
down from the blinding
sheet of gold, it must be

a mind-altering, life-changing
experience, knowing the
effect of the optical illusion
she created.

Only when you climb the
last stair and reach the
temple's flat surface
is where the angels appear.

Now look around.  In heavenly
cosmology, this spot really
does mark a wondrous place
 between earth and heaven.

Watch what happens when we climb
The Stairway to Heaven.

Totally love this, Sage. Seems autobiographical and yet universal somehow... challenging and yet illuminating of that unexpressed, inexplicable quintessence that lurks within each one of us... comforting as well as provoking. Great juxtaposition of the very cerebral and concrete imagery against the ethereal and mystical, holding that tension indeed between heaven and earth. You take us to the Tableland and invite us to dine. This poem is like climbing Everest and beyond in "How To" and "Step-by-Step" SageStages... I've me crampons on and am ready to go! :)) Great stuff! Sage, stunning imagery. I felt like I was climbing the stairs. Your work is always so spiritual. Few realize the need as humans to keep moving upward in the things of the spirit. I'll meet you at the top of the stiars.

Sage, an ethereal climb into the heavenlies! Be assured that anyone who has reached the stairs, has already reached the stars!

Jacob's ladder. Sage's ladder. Matters not a whit. The ordeal, and it IS an ordeal, to keep stepping up that ladder, or stairway, whatever, but it is well worth the trouble and strife when the last step is placed firmly on the other side. If our human form is corrupted with diseases of the flesh and of the mind, then the Heaveanly body will have to, as a mater of comparision, be free of head lice and cancer and brains that drown their children in bathtubs and those that lay with their children and all of the other horrible things we do to each other. It is necessary to keep this in mind as we trudge that stairway to Heaven.
