That’s What Friends Are For

She was severely depressed

She had lost her loving mate

Zookeepers were very concerned

They were worried about her fate

She now sat very glumly

She refused to eat or play

She had lost all zest for life

They fretted for her everyday

Tondalayo the female orangutan

Was already forty five years of age

When a tiny furry friend showed up

Who was both compassionate and sage

This friend cared not they didn’t look alike

Nor that they weren’t even of the same race

But this new friend truly brought her much solace

His loving companionship her loneliness soon replaced

Soon old Tondalayo was feeling much much better

She and young T.K. have been together now awhile

These best friends cuddle play and comfort each other

And this is one animal story that truly makes me smile

This young stray orange tabby cat just showed up one afternoon

In this old grieving orangutan’s enclosure in Panama City Beach

Zoo World custodians soon named him T.K. – Tondalayo’s Kitty

And it still amazes me the many life lessons animals can truly teach

How many of us can really and truly claim

We do all we can for our sad or grieving friends

And some wonder why I love earth’s animals so much

To me their amazing compassion - just never seems to end

That's what friends are for;
For good times and for bad times,
This cat will be on her side forever more,
Why? Because that's what friends are for.

Cats knows when you feel sad, or when you don't feel good. My cat always knows it. They are wonderful companion. The one in the picture is an angel sent. Sandie May Angel a.k.a. Sandie Angel :o)

This reminds me of KoKo the lowland gorilla who adores cats. Because she can communicate, she actually asked for her first kitten for her birthday...and asked that it be red. Sometimes we have to ask ourselves who are really the beasts of this land...certainly not these two in the picture. Take care, Sherry

Love it Ed! So good to read when things are the way they are supposed to be. We don't see enough of it, these days.I grew up in a home with a mother who befriended every one and every thing, no matter what they were, or looked like, or had. Her example is one I wish I could emulate! Thanks for another great poem! tiger lily

Cats have healing & intuitive qualities and are attuned to other mammal's distress. They are drawn to those that need comfort, giving without expectation of return. Angels come in many forms. You can see the sadness in Tondalayo's eyes and the gratefullness of her freind's love-what a pic. I'm dabbin' my eyes, Ed. Wonderful write! Lin

I think an God or an angel let that cat to that exact spot!!! I once lost a dear dog, really grieved..... Every once in a while, that dog would take off for the night,come back wet, stinky and happy, I think they feel the call of the wild and just cannot resist every so often. I would not be upset when she took off, because i knew when she got hungry, she would return. ] Well aft she died, this yellow lab, chased my son home from the bus stop, he didn't know the dog and he and his friend ran thru the woods, over barbed wire fences, climbed rocks to get away and ran till they lost breath lol....turned out the dog was friendly,and followed my son home, right into my house..........long story short lol......her owners wound up giving her to us......... my point is......... via my mom lol she said.........God...sent the spirt of my dog named....lol ready.......PAX... to this dog and told her, we needed a dog to love, and she needed a different home.......... and i belive it! who knows maybe they roamed the woods together, because the new dog...Chabby...aka Chablis was a wonderer, thats why her owners gave her up......but in our home.......she was content. Beauitful furry friendship poem and story ty for sharing pax grrrr woof.......A

A very passionate write. There are areas where animals show better performance than man. Being a true friend is one area they excel us. Many many friends are friends only when the time is good. You weave a masterly interplay of animal and human compassion and empathy Ed, in this endearing and enchanting composition There are many salutory and defining lessons we can learn from the animal kingdom, where there exists an almost instinctive and spontaneous mutual respect and trust between creatures in the field ! I am still fascinated today, when you see starlings sitting on the backs of cows and bulls, removing the unwanted ticks and vectors from their hides, as a source of food to them, and instant relief to their hosts The picture is charming, and you enhance your reputation as the Defender of the Wilds !
