Becoming Clear Here
When, at last, it becomes clear
that we are merely visitors here,
when it is finally evident
we won't be staying long,
as we feel the hot breath
of mortality moving down our spines
and mortality pressing
down through the soles of our feet,
requiring rest, sleep,
moving less,
as we begin to unlock
that unknown door,
pretense begins to melt.
Like the beginning of a brook,
like loosening words
from a page,
individual notes floating
past the stage
we will fade from bright
to shade.
It is not wrong.
It is life.
We ignited into adulthood
too busy to be afraid.
We lived
without fear of
old age.

| Hi Kathy, I like this poem. And, it comes at a time when I am reflecting on our mortality, as I posted in an article here this morning. |
