To Tova

That Something

You and I should know,
we who relinquished our freedom
long ago,
fighting so long to reclaim it.
We can name it.

It is programming pumping
into the veins
of the nation.
The passing off
of self consciousness.
Assuming others are better
than us.

Don't blame circumstances.
What is so carefully planned
will have us
kill each other.

It is our connection
to all life and
the experience of cruelty.
It is living through loss
that teaches life's significance.
It's about paying
too high a price.
Not paying attention
to massive tragedy,
now, today and every day.

It is time
and past time too
for all artists to bring this to attention,
to be the expression,
to use our voices to assist
in naming what is nameless.

We know what we're saying.
