Tantalizing aromas
entice the senses
with delicious hints
of pleasure that
could be mine, if
I'll only step inside.

A bluesy guitar sings
my pain up and down
the street, begging me
to join the chorus
I know so well, if
I'll only step inside.

Dancers parade their wares
with sinous moves,
tempting the mind
with dark images
to be enjoyed if
I'll only step inside.

Cajun music waltzes
out of open doors,
two steps 'round my head,
takes me by the hand;
fun to be had, if
I'll only step inside.

Promises of free drink
stagger from the bars,
hiccups in my face,
puddles at my feet;
it's on the house, if
I'll only step inside.

Magick incantations
invite communion
with undead spirits,
voodoo'ed zombies; I
will understand if
I'll only step inside.

N'Awlins of the past:
I'll always recall
the sounds and tastes of
the Crescent City ...
will people ever
remember what I do?

(c) 2006, Karla Dorman.

This lyrical enchantment is a literary New Orleans all unto itself. So glad I stepped inside. I have read no more fitting tribute to the city than yours. Thanks for this!

Great capture, Karla. Each line is a string of beads, all colors awash in great memories. You will write about New Orleans when she comes in new. She'll be back!

I remember very well. I lived on South Peters in the Garden District while I worked as a traveling manager there in New Orleans. We had a shop and gallery on Bourbon and another at the Riverwalk. From the busy waterfront to the French Quarter New Orleans was a great Lady of many accents, smells and music that constantly made every night a "New Orleans moment". That will never disappear as it lives on in the spirit of the people today. It will be delayed but it will be back.
This is a wonderful tribute to a GREAT LADY..ne-olens"

Love and peace,
Susan

I was in the French Quarter very recently, and it truly is coming back strong; wish I could say the same for the rest of the city. But this is a wonderful poem to good ole N'Awlin Nights.

Karla~

Wonderful imagery in this compassionate write; all we can do is pray that she arises from the floodwaters of poverty bigger and better than ever, a place where ALL people can coexist in peace and harmony! Very well done; brava!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your twin sister, Karen Lynn. :( >tears <
