Pre poem for my trip to New Orleans. I hope to find places to write my heart out, from the emotion of Katrina.

Oh sweet New Orleans lover of mine,
Whose spell cast itself upon my heart.
Haunting me with her dynamic imagery,
Feeling her streets come alive under me.
Then to see them flooded in hurricane truth!
Got to feel tears falling down my face.

Her magnetism has captured my imagination.
As her haunting fingers stretch across America,
Remembering Cathedral political promises.
Finding instead, American citizen’s compassion,
Scraping back together the image of the past.
Got to feel tears falling down my face.

I fear you now, but poetry must face the imagery.
The anticipation of what is left, what is now gone.
To see blocks and blocks and blocks of pure pain,
Wondering, why someone didn’t do their homework!
As bodies float around to face drowning reality.
Got to feel tears falling down my face.

Yes I have to go to my beloved adopted city that
Some in Washington wanted to bulldoze over.
Would they do that to New York City, or
To religiously conservative Lynchburg Virginia?
But in the Artmosphere of the Big Easy the
Katrina Blues are playing the survival march.
Got to feel tears falling down my face.

How long before politics forgets America again?
They focus on their Washington Five Star meals.
Lobbying for pocket change for foreign golf outings.
But the pictures will never wipe away the shame.
So a poet comes to share his words with his eyes,
To see what a heart feels like, breaking into tears.
Got to feel tears falling down my face.

So upon a Jackson Square with no floodlights
I will kneel, praying that people remember the words
Of what was promised and what was delivered
As a poet cries for those that were lost, saying a
Prayer that money for dykes does not go to Iraq.
For the war for American streets must be won first!

New Orleans is special to me, too. She's calling a lot of people to feel the tears falling down their faces. I've cried buckets...Maybe someone will have enough power to actually do something about it. Like Ed Kostro, who goes down and helps find lost and abandoned animals. Wish I were going with'll be in my prayers. A heartfelt, moving, compassionate poem, very well penned.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
