When I was very young,
I dreaded sports:
I did not like them
and was not good at them.

At school, when it came time to play
and they were choosing up sides,
they would always argue
over who had to take me.

And I would make an excuse
to go to the bathroom
and I would stand at the urinal
and cry.

Not because
I wanted to play,
but because
I was not wanted.

As I grew older,
I became captivated
by the game
of Being Gay.

I never was a star,
but I was good at it
and there were lots of guys
who wanted to play.

The game was fun
and familiar,
and I knew
I would play it forever.

But as the years passed
I began to notice
that fewer people
were choosing me to play with.

Until now, once again,
I find I am not wanted in the game.
But I am a man now, and I do not cry.
Not on the outside.

Dorien, this is as stirring and as heartbreaking as the time and cookies poem. I'm glad to know your poetry is posted here. I will return often...

I can relate to this, no one ever wanted me, the fat kid, either, but I learned really quick that it is better to be disliked for who you are than to be liked for who you are not, and it is much better to be a leader than a follower. This is a deep poem that so many could relate to in different ways, and that is a gift to someone else out there struggling with sexual orientation, being overweight, racism, etc. and who reads this and knows they are not alone. I think you are better than the real Dorian, after all, he was a fake, and this writing is real, more like Oscar.

poignant read. 'Until now, once again,
I find I am not wanted in the game. ' sad to say, gay, straight or spotted leopard, i think this is pretty much the way of life as we become older.
