A determined woman is dangerous.

Her Share

On a crisp day in early April
months since she had seen a visitor
the sight of a new someone
driving a team and wagon toward
their place gripped her down where
nature controls mind and body

His team halted on the time-harden road
greeting her in a low rumbling voice
more pleasant than the preacher’s
and from her a soft hello staring
into eyes of a man younger than Papa

Her dream is reality for a young man
who asks if Luke Barkley lives here
bringing a vigorous nod
catching his wide smile
of beautiful teeth and kind lips

He is the one Papa talked about at
breakfast the helper for
planting and harvesting
and she at eighteen had begun
planning a special celebration
and a harvest of her own
around the time of Thanksgiving
