As I trek the burning wasteland
From sea to boiling sea
I look back and fondly gaze
Upon the mutants tracking me
I have stumbled untold miles
And crawled across the fiery earth
Like a haggard, used up salmon
To the Hellhole of my birth

I will never know what went wrong
On this lovely World of Woe
All I have seen is misery
Everywhere that I did go
All the clouds on the horizon
Have been of the mushroom kind
All I hear is that Glen Campbell
Bleating, “Gentle on My Mind’

So I cross the burned up valleys low
And scale the haunted mountains high
Not sure to whence I’m headed
Yet I’ll get there bye and bye
I am driven by sheer instinct
Which keeps me shuffling on
From ungodly nuclear sunset
To unholy nuclear dawn

I keep trekking burning wasteland
From sea to boiling sea
And wish to God those mutants
Would quick catch up with me
I will rest here at the sulphur lake
And here await my kind
All I can hear is Campbell
Bleating, “Gentle on My Mind”

Excellent descriptive write Duke! Filled with the anguish so many seem to be feeling. Hard not to. It's best to stay within our own spirit, at least we can find reason there;-)Keep writing!

Ah yes, Duke. I have felt this way and still often do. This reads like the description of a vision and I do appreciate the contrasting "Gentle on My Mind" infusion. Check out my poem, "No Place To Stop" and see if I'm right when I state that I think we're on the same page. Thank you for sharing this offering. Love and peace to you,
