Even Though You Won't Answer

I'm writing this poem for you, Daddy, even though
you no longer care. I don't wish you were here

anymore, and I don't understand why
I'm writing poetry for you, since you don't

appreciate the effort it takes to achieve
that perfection poetry demands. I doubt

you've read anything but the obligatory Shakespeare
and Plath. You only like books with pictures

of bloated bodies of drowners and naked
murder victims, black rectangles shrouding

places that their clothing should
cover. Poetry can create pictures

too. The photograph of you before divorce
is poetry--poetry of the contrast

between who you were then and who
you have made yourself, your crew cut

grown long and permed to discredit
the gray. Your old police badge--

that is its own poetry too. The light
glints off the gold eagle, catches

on the great seal of Missouri. The blue
enamel around you badge number, 146,

is cracked. There's even poetry
in that t-shirt you bought me

in New York City the last time
I saw you. The red heart and letters

are faded from repeated washes,
but if I hold it up to my face

long enough, I can smell the ferry
popcorn and the smoggy air.
