Night Lights
Years ago someone took
Those battered highways and
Rearranged homes, scattering dustbowl nonsense
And mingling with the stars.
Performance cars chugged oil droplets,
Managed throne room decorum, and
Waited, hiccoughing popcorn.
Night lights whizzed overhead,
And monstrous trees
Swayed.
As lines diminished, screens fluttered,
Only action-adventure
Pursued the American dream
And tuff Chevvies gulped Pepsi.
Credits rolled and stars
Switched places, kisses spent
Their bullets, firing from
Close range.
Gunfights ruled and
Slo-mo factions
Applauded.
Midnight came too soon,
And children nodding
In back seats snored nightmares.
Home to bed.
Home to bed.
Those Sunday morns
Brought church sermons and
French toast.
