Sunday on Hunting Island, South Carolina

stretches of coastline chopped into islands
dying old trees living in silence
wonderful lack-a-daysical day
strumming the heart in peculair ways
osprey out dining from tree to tree
dragging his dinner between he and me
off in the distance the Sandpiper's dance
amid tidal influx with a seafoam chance
pelicans, terns and laughing gulls
rotting tree trunks and old stumps that bulge
making a sunday more special than most
footprints in time along the eastcoast
there is a hand wrapped to another
moments of grace while tender lips smother
words for the memory laced all in tears
wondering if hopes can hold down the years
seconds stand still on wings of a whim
shudders are open to catch it on film
moments so full and recalling time
when long legged damsels tasted a rhyme
back in the days when hearts ran so free
open and shut, longing to be
time in a capsul refreshed anew
chasing the tears as yesterday flew
Hunting Island...lost to a thought
a rebel in hoopskirts with her own swampfox
mysterious spirits break in a new day
along silent barrier islands that play
host to the memories of days gone by
when romance is caught in low misted sighs
trailing the dreams of dixie and ghosts
dangling in time along the eastcoast
nature and trees and tides all sashayed
making a moment important today.

Susan,

So much said and felt in this poem. Topped off with exquisite photo of driftwood on a wide southern beach. And all that Erin said....etc.etc. <grin>

This is exquisite, Susan, to my mind! Haunting, hiding, laughing, abiding, rhyming and chiding... As well as being ellipitical, mystical, egotistical, and, damn fine writing!!

A place where one can wax nostalgic. Nature takes me back eons, before we humans made footprints in the sand.

Thanks for the marvelous trip down the coast. Words by Susan make it better than the real thing, and this is a great example. Too many of us only look and admire beauty, but you cogitate, reflect and ponder before sharing it with us. - Bill

Susan

Your poetry has soared to a new level recently, and it was very good before...

Your love of nature and the Deep South are clearly evident in this inspired and wonderful reflection..

I can just imagine James Taylor crooning " And I'm going to Carolina in my Mind " in the background
Love the driftwood graphic too !

The land of Dixie is a place that is just in books of faraway lands, that set the mind alight as a kid.. Amazing how in this day we can read from people in such far flung fairy tale lands...

Nicely done, Susan.
I like the picture too...would love to have a hunk of that twisted wood.

Susan, I love the nostalgic romance in this piece. You've captured the esscnce of the beach not only in your own dreams and memories, but you've taken your reader through a bit of history in the wanderings of your mind that Sunday on the beach...and with a gently curious lilt and perhaps a tear. I can even hear your day dream.
The photograph is absolutely perfect.
Love,
Taylor~
