Before

Before the plaza opened
Sage Allen
and Weiners clothes
for distinguished men,

Before Grants,
where we could buy two cent candy
and the salesclerk would
weigh it, bag it,
and send you up front,

Before my brother,
his mouth permanently red,
chipped
his teeth on atomic fireballs,

When cigarettes were a quarter
and eight track tapes
advanced technology,
before the plaza
was a field of weeds
before
anything frightening
ever got through,
before you lost me,
before I lost you.

Sad ending, glad to see the back of the eight track.
Nothing stays the same..
