Symbol of the west...

Ancient sentinel of the desert world
arms outstretched towards the heavens
steadfast totem of arid existence.

Flechettes standing at the ready
armor, most lovely and unforgiving
winds caress yet escape your wrath.

Birds, bees and bats are your muses,
darkly visiting with pollen gifts
assuring generational perpetuation.

Standing in dry silence you wait, turgid,
gathering unseen droplets from below
for future vivid blooms to bear.

Heavy apostle of the badlands,
lifeless sand and rock adorn your foot.
Your presence defines your strength.

Perseverance is your very essence.
Time is of little consequence.
Live long, your desert secrets to keep.

These cacti also amazed me during my time in Arizona earlier this year - miraculous sentinels of the desert regions! You've captured their essence well and have maintained a tight poetics avoiding end rhymes by maintaining a three line verse structure supplemented by keeping each line to between 8-10 syllables. Evocative writing!

Wisdom, knowledge, art and science met to compose "Saguaro", and the picture of creation was revealed with the magical colors of a poetic rainbow.

In admiration,

the tone in the verse set and unmistakable mood.
I shall venture on into the caverns of this thought…
so well done.

From the colors of the desert to the quiet passion of her heart you capture the radiance of her soft dance..is it a tango?
The music, is it Gabor Zabba?

There are just so many things to like about this one, Butch...I believe each verse could easily stand alone. You manage to bring romance to the desert with keen imagery. I'm just hanging on

"steadfast totem of arid existence", but if I had to pick just one verse, it would be the last

"Perseverance is your very essence.

Time is of little consequence.

Live long, your desert secrets to keep.

You've captured that "very essence" with the magnificence the Saguaro commands. I can feel the prickly spines...and await the blossom.

Love and Christmas Hugs,

Taylor
