Why do I cry for you Anna
when so many have laughed
when so many have feasted on your flesh

We all wanted you Anna
voluptuous barbarian
pounding at our gate
to entertain us
Anna
you let the photographers steal your soul
and our endless hunger
leach out your humanity

You drove the dark highways of incoherence
mother, whore, princess, goddess
the playmate of flaccid mortals
the diva of concrete and astroturf
a symbol for global overheating
and we left you
a broken sexual savant
in the breakdown lane

We sucked you dry Anna
while you were smiling
while I worshipped your fallibility
your tireless blondness
and your perfect teeth

We will never bury you Anna
your image has become impressed
on the coin of the realm
and we are spending you
like the nouveau riche
We are spending you
decadent angel
our white trash princess
crowned and martyred
deflowered
in the wet dreams of bankrupt sleep

We will never bury you Anna
like you could never bury
your pain or your loss
or disguise your true self
with glamourous clothing and jewels

I will cry for you
because we all believed
the digitized goddess
was throwing each of us her kisses
throwing her marvelous body
and begging for love

And our love was sick and transient
our love was a commodity
the pink pork belly of fat capitalists

Our love was fraud and your hips were real
and we emptied you of fire
extinguished your rambling
incomprehensible need
reaching out to the camera

You will not be buried
you will not sink as witches do
but you will rise
you will be triumphant
somehow
calling us
to lay our heads on your massive chest and weep

You will not be buried in Texas or the Bahamas
the moon will cool the hardened earth
and the minions of catastrophe
will carry you off in the night


This is America’s finest hour
eating TV dinners of vapid sin
in front of their plasma screens
indicting lip gloss
the mascara wands of fairy godmothers
the wanton wives of global econometrics

By design
we fed on you honey
and now
we pick our teeth
with your perfect bones

down to the funeral pyre
to obliterate your only gift

for a baptism of fire
