The road I travel is often elusive

The road goes on
Never ending
Long and full of twists and turns
Up hills that seem
far greater than the down
Even when I sleep,
I see the road
Never easier
Just continuing
On and on and on

In the moonlight sometimes
The shapes to the sides
Look as if they're watching
Laughing, mocking
The light of day reveals
No feelings there
No understanding
No question worthy of asking

The dreams tell of travels to be
Or that have been
Most often convoluted
An exaggeration of reality
Reality being only
An exaggeration of perception
Each his own
Hers being no one else's

The long road beckons
And I continue
The places I rest
Soon forgotten
The goal of the movement
So elusive
Yet for her I grasp
Never touching
Always missing
Exciting all the while

My road may not take me
To my goal
The one object I await
For it is almost ending
I feel it more and
Realize the perpetuality
Is slowing
I see less horizon
I hear less distant whispers
Quiet soon, stopped at last
I know this
