88-A Tribute in Haiku
© 2007
Dan Johnson

Since 2002, 88 Soldiers and Sailors, with direct ties to the State of Oregon have given their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Young boys grow up fast
Fighting a war on strange dirt
No fair! Don’t care! Stop!

Incoming the cry!
Before they know it…they die,
But no one knows why.

Their valor so great,
Have to honor those brave troops,
The valiant eighty-eight!

A sad note, since posting this piece, one more Soldier from Oregon has given their life...the number now is 89...when will it stop?

There is no glory in war. Answers that make any sense are hard to come by. The selfless love these fallen men and women had for their fellow countrymen will never be forgotten. May they rest in peace. I thank God for each and every one of them.

Great write with haiku. Quite a tribute by telling a story of the 88 men who lost their lives fighting a cause. Have you tried writing 'tanka'-style poetry? It's fun.

Theirs is valor so great

Indeed, it is - and we must never forget them, as we seem to far too often do in this very forgetful and often ungrateful nation of ours.
