I have been asked this many times over the years since I wrote my first poem and never had the same answer twice and that is what this poem is expressing...

“What do you write he asked?

could I have read your books?

laid my pen down on my notepad

and I turned to him and said…

“I write stories about the people

I meet from day to day

about my family, about friends

the things they want to say

I write of love that’s strong

and of love gone wrong

of clocks that take too long

about the birds and bees

about kids with bony knees

I write about majestic trees

I write in hopes that death and war

will be no more

that everyone will feed the poor

I write how wedding bells chime

ivory seashore shells lost in time

my friend all these things are  fine…”

he looked at me bored and said “I see...”

then as he turned quick to depart

I smiled at him before I said

“It’s simple I write what’s in my heart.”

Hi Fee,

I looked this up after your review. Oh yes -- the heart not the details. I think this is one of you best.

Each poem we write is a story in itself. We develop it between mind and pen and marvel, sometimes, at what we say. We tell the truth which can only come from the heart. Good write!

The first book signing I attended way back when was for a poet from our community. When she signed my book we chated for a minute or two and about my own writing she said, "Always write from your heart." I've always been true to those words and you've expressed them so very well in your very moving poem Fee.

the minute you stop writing from your heart and soul is the day you will cease to be a poet. May that day never come.

That is all we can write, unless your mind goes out to play then you still just have to write what's in your heart.

Fee, I adore your work. This is so beautifully penned and so very very true.

YOu forgot ALL your stormy shores poem Sweetie! or did you?
You covered so much, what is in every poets heart, and a few dark ones, thrown in for measure and we have a poetry extravaganza! What "I" LOVED best about this poem (I have to tell ya') is, YOU put down your pen, and looked at him, it showed full attention as you explained! Important in any relationship sharing! I enjoyed this poem, of reality!
Let's ALWAYS write, write, write, what's from our hearts/soul!

STay Happy, STrong and enjoy your changes ahead Sweet Fee!

Yes! You do Fee. I've read so many different poems that you've written of family, death, the sea, mystery and romance. In all of them the common bond is your heart that comes out very clearly. Your heart is huge and it has more room as well for all the future adventures you're planning and those that will be a mystery even for you. Have fun. You make writing a treasure.
