I worked evenings for sometime...
so for awhile after work i would go walking around the block mostly for exercise, partly to unwind after work.
This literally what happened one night
and rather a happy end considering me.

I get home from another day
Unlock the door
Hit the light
I could stay but I know I can’t
See it’s 5 minutes to midnight
And I need to slip away.
I walk to the corner
The cops are poaching the street
Looking for some nameless joe
They flash their spotlight at me than move on
Guess they don’t know my crimes
But my wrongs done are a lifetime ago
In a faraway place
Although I’d swear they hang like a noose from my throat
Because it’s 4 minutes to midnight
And there is a dead bird hanging from my neck

I pass more cops I avoid their eyes
Though I know they watch me
What fool walks near midnight
In a soggy night like this
He should be home a bed with wife or love
They like everyone else don’t understand
I need to remove the frustration
I need to unwind
I need to stop the screaming in my head
‘Sides there no one at home
Soon it’s 3 minutes to midnight
And the monsters have come home to roost

I twitch and shudder
Shake and crack
My mind goes over the day and finds fault
With actions, deeds, or words
Should of did, should of said
My mind revolves over what has happened
And there is a physical reaction as I try to
Come to a better way to be
Sometimes I think I speak too much
But most times I speak too little
Now it’s 2 minutes to midnight
And I need a bit of hope

Bitter, cynical words seep into me
Biting deep into my flesh
Hatred for all and everything and everyone
Burns through to my very bones
But then like always it implodes
Burrowing back into me
Redirecting anger, because there is no one at fault
But myself
Finally, it’s 1 minute to midnight
Soon it will be done

I near home
The walk is done
A song comes on the stereo
It speaks to me, like I haven’t heard it before
I didn’t realize what the singer had said
And brings me a trace of happiness
That someone understands
A final thought, I guess
Happiness is only a second
So stretch those seconds as far as you can
Because it’s midnight now
And you have another day ahead of you
