There was a time, or so I'm told
when love was meant for growing old
when hearts were strong
and sang love's song
of yesterday, today, and forever...

My first "true love" was sweet sixteen
when innocence could dream a dream
when words were free
no telling me
of yesterday, today, and forever...

My soul has paid too high a price
for rolling life's most precious dice
for seeking love without the price
of yesterday, today, and forever...

Yesterday’s gone, today is a loss
and forever demands too high a cost
for hearts to heal and love to taste
of yesterday, today, and forever...

Many loves have come and gone
my heart is hard, but not too strong
I've lost the lyrics to love's sweet song
of yesterday,
and forever...

I very much felt you poem Lori. I do not feel myself worthy of critique, but, if I did I could only say, your words were strong yet gentle all in on poem. I very much enjoyed.

I like the way you handled the subject matter. Many times, this is very tricky and personal, and it makes the reader feel embarrassed to be there, but yours is well done.

Lori, I really like this poem.

"for rolling life's most precious dice" -- I like this analogy
"My heart is hard, but not too strong" -- I feel sad for the narrator

I have recently written of "lost lyrics" (posted as an article) although in my case it is a long-term relationship that seems lost.

Really enjoy reading your work. :)

Nicely spoken! I too have felt your pain! I have lost the lyrics, and I think it might not only be for tomorrow... :(

i think you understand 'one" aspect of love and put it into words so nicely...but it is the "love" in your own heart that will save you....
Reviewed by richard poor 7/16/2002
Excellent, but if this is true then it breaks my heart to see you so sad.

Somehow I find it hard to believe that your passion has died. I hear love screaming to be set free trapped within a broken heart. Someday you will venture into love's trechorous waters again, when its right, when its good.
Love the feeling of our verse

This puts me to mind of a country song sang by the Judds years ago, called
something like, "Grandpa, Tell Me About The Good Ole Days". It is a classic...and runs right with this.
Great statement...and yes, love demands a lot out of you...choosing the wrong
partner takes its toll. But, love is worth it when you find someone who loves you
..someone who isn't going to run at the sign of first trouble...someone who
believes as you do...that love is supposed to last forever. Good luck on the
hunt...and love wisely. God knows, I didn't before I met my husband. Sheesh,
~shakes head at myself~. ;)

Lori, this is just plain awesome. Great rythm and feel. I agree with Morchuis about self-denial albeit I'm not one to talk. Your poetry shows a great spirit.

I could give a couple of paragraphs of advice or encourgement regarding the subject matter. but since one never knows if what we write about is fiction or not.
I will simply tell you that your style is flawless you express even pain in such a beautiful way.
it is always a pleasure reading whatever you write. Thank you

An amazing write Lori...your style has gained even more ground to objectivity. The romance still shows through this. I loved the accentuation of "Yesterday, Today and Forever" which gave this particular piece more meaning.

My Sweet Lori.....

I understand your words, for I have walked with you in them, but though they sound trite, "hold on" are words of wisdom. When you least expect it, the right one comes along and sees that you are worth his entire life. Keep your hand open, so he can slip his into it.......... Hold on.......

Hi Lori,
Self denial although appearing logical at the onset, seems to lose its sense of purpose as time goes on.
I dont think any one can ever be to old to recall the words of love.
ps the tune well that is a different matter all together.

Aww.... Lori~

Just a song at twilight
when the lights are low
and the flickering candles
softly come and go
though the heart be weary
sad the days are long
just a song at twilight
comes love's sweet song
comes love's old sweet song.

Hold on, don't give up. I hope that helped :)
