A Halloween Dream....

Dancing At Midnight
By La Belle Rouge

The perfect autumn evening
graced with a cool breeze
all around us falling leaves

The orchestra plays that waltz
we danced to on our wedding day.
Once again your arms surround me
as we move perfectly together
under a rotund Southern moon.
The summer roses are withered
but the mums are in bloom.
Our garden still invites romance.

You are handsome in gray uniform
but the sword at your side
is a grim reminder of the brutal war
you must return to at sunrise.
The night is eerily quiet except
for the music and our conversation.
No candles burn in the house windows.
Somewhere in the distance we hear
the lonely howl of a solitary dog.

Our feet never touch the ground
as we blend with the music.
“Free them,” I whisper in your ear.
“They will be freed anyway.
No need of slaves when the war ends.
Free them or we’re both dead”
“Yes we are, we are already dead,”
I hear you reply as together we
slowly fade away into the black night.

The perfect autumn evening
a cool breeze, falling leaves
and shadows dancing at midnight

Ghosts of times past. Shadows dancing at midnight. The premise and poem is romantic, but melancholic.

Loved it. The music is haunting and a perfect match for your words.

M'lady, that all the southern magnolies find refuge in your hair and your skin be soft as and with the essence of ripe peaches, hoping that your rosa laced kerchief dry from my brow the last tears of battle exhaustion so I will be fresh to dance with m'lady long after the rooster welcome the sun.
