Grief is Now My Sister

Walking arm in arm
the Cambridge sidewalk,
thrift shopping or stopping
for frozen yogurt,
is now my sister.

She's alot like you.
Warmer, wiser than me.
my sister self
walks ahead
patiently urging me
to the next block,
where we'll rest.

Teaching me to step
when I'm stopped
to see why I hide;
how briefly we live,
how soon we die.

Grief is my sister,
my new best friend,
and sometimes we sloush
through murky mud,
or drop down to quicksand,
and sometimes we're together
in a hypnotic dream
and hours and hours
and days and days
fly by
and it all feels like a minute,
and it all feels like infinity.

My new sister and I
walk arm in arm
carrying our love for you
like the beats in a measure
like the drops of rain
that fall to earth
to be soaked up again.
