BETTE DAVIS EYES

i saw her at the bus stop
little overnight bag in her hand
something about the pain on her face
made me wonder to myself
“is she running from a man?”

it was midnight and stormy
and i knew the bus was always late
should i ask her if she needed a ride?
would i be taking too much on my plate?

she got into the car reluctantly
i could sense her hopelessness and fear
i took a towel from the backseat
handed it to her saying “here”

as she wiped the rain from her face
i noticed the beauty of her delicate hand
and when i looked into her bette davis eyes
i knew she needed someone to understand

so i pulled off to the curb and said,
“i’m a good listener if you need to unload"
she poured out all her pain to me
as i held her close there by the side of the road

she had no money, no where to go
the bruises on her face broke my heart
what could i do to help her through the night
where should i, could i, even start

i took her tenderly in my arms
like a little girl lost in the night
and i whispered softly into her ear
'baby girl, everything’s gonna be alright'

that night i took her home to my place
just to give her some time to rest
in the middle of the night i woke up
with her pretty head on my chest

it was a night of tender sensuality
touches of healing, liberating fire
she felt things she had never felt before
when gentle kisses released her desire

she stayed with me a month
until she had a job and was on her feet
but sometimes she uses her key
and we share an occasional night so sweet

i love it when in the middle of the night
she wakes me with little kisses on my chest
and of all the ladies i’ve had in my bed
what we share is so special, the best
