Silent Witness

"Our lives begin to end the day we remain silent about things that matter." ~~~ Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

They used to see her all the time
They passed by her house each day
They always looked, but never spoke up
They never had something to say.

The weather got colder, heavy winds blew
Thick snows covered the ground
They looked as they passed, but never spoke up
And she couldn’t make a sound.

Her chain had dug in, her neck was rubbed raw
Her food dish was nowhere in sight
Her house had collapsed under thick winter weight
Her paws were black from frostbite.

Winter passed, and they walk by
They look but still don’t speak up
The broken house anchors a different sad dog
And this one’s only a pup

They see her grow old day by day
All alone, still their voices restrain
But silent witness does nothing to help
a forgotten dog at the end of a chain

One fantastic and heartwarming write. Whether animals or children is is always very sad when people do not speak up or try to change the situation...

Be safe,
Karen

You twisted and tangled my animal-activist heart. I would definitely send this into PETA or any other animal organization. Maybe even a local humane society for an advertisement. Really well written - and not many poems on this brutal and taboo topic.

Heartbreaking! We need to help our animal friends, especially those who are forgotten or alone! Powerful message here; very well penned!
