my one and only poem when I was a teen
written for a friend .

Battle of Wills

A young friend who found me in the net
invited me recently to be a columnist
in his to be launched youthsite,
this made me unearth
my one and only poem
written when I was a teen.

It was for a bosom friend .
Penned on June 11, 1975.
Finished on June 14 ,1975.
Prepared for the world
on August 5, 2001.
It was about issues
we both feel for strongly.

After more than 25 years
transcending time and space
I believe
we will always be friends
in essence and in spirit.

Battle of Wills

ĎTis like politics, you say?
Well, at times it occured to me that way.
And further on you explained:
Sometimes others are used to gain oneís ends.

But now, I ask how great the gain,
that some of you could stand the pain
of friends who felt the onslaughts most
of friends who tried to mould you forth.

So close a friend are we
that I closely sensed the change in thee.
Mayhaps itíll be our fault,
or else you wonít yourself persist
of self destroying thoughts
and of self destroying deeds.

Are we the real cause?
Or life has lost her precious gloss...?

Youíve matured, thatís okay.
But does that mean youíre right
in ALL undertakings and ways?

Is this the road youíve chosen to tread?
To enter the battle of wills
and later be reduced ...
to shreds?

Alas...! I too decided to stand my ground,
but then itís on the other side.

And now we are facing each other
amidst the dying spark of friendship
amidst the raging clash of wills.

Well... go on ...decide !!!
Do we restore friendship to life?
Or do we...
leave its links to rot?

This has nice cadance. The lines and sentiment are very good. Instead of having so many choppy, irregular verses, I would have combined them into one larger verse, so as not to lose the impact of the message. Irregular verses are distracting. ~E
